How To Prevent Cats From Scratching Your Furniture
Now that you know why we cats love to scratch, I’m sure you do not want us to scratch your precious expensive leather couch from Italy. It goes the same for your wooden tables, curtains and sideboard. That means you need to get me a good scratching pad.
Not every cat is as smart as me, so you better let my feline friends know what the scratching pad is for. Put the scratching post somewhere where we can access it easily. Sometimes, after a yummy meal, or some good licking, we feel like having a scratch.
This is where you have to be constantly attending to us. If we look like we are going to scratch something soon, quickly pick up that and put it near the scratching post. I’m not sure how you are going to carry that huge sofa, but I’m sure you can work something out. Sooner or later, we will learn that we should be scratching the post instead of your furniture.
If we keep scratching a particular item or furniture in the house, then you might want to remove that item and change it to a scratching post at that spot. We will soon learn that it is the scratching pad that we should be scratching and not elsewhere.
While people like to say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, it sorts of apply to us cats too. Of course that doesn’t apply to me. I’m still young at heart.You need to teach us when we are young. It is extremely hard to unlearn unwanted behaviour if you never spend enough time to teach us when we are young.
Sometimes, we may scratch as a form of devotion (it should be our acknowledgement of you feeding us), and we may leave our scent over your scent. If you rub your hands or clothing over the scratching post, we don’t mind scratching that post. That’s something you may want to know, even though my feline friends are going to kill me for revealing this.
