Cat Coat Colours

Just like how you humans have different colours, and some hairier than the other, it goes the same for us. We cats have different breeds, with a wide range of colours and fur.

Sometimes, we get special partners to breed with, so that our kittens become stronger, or just to have a certain type of coat colouring. Through the years, with some mutations, you can find different types of fur too. Is this good or bad?

The main colours are black, blue, grey, ginger and of course, white. When these colours mix together and you get different patterns, so we don’t look alike.

The domestic cats originally had the markings that we now know as the tabby cat, as all cats initially came from the wild.

It is through selective breeding, mutations, and the choices of different colored kittens to breed, that the current range of coat colorings and fur types has become available.

There are various different patterns in many different combinations of colors that go with these patterns from black, blue, and gray, ginger and so on to choose from.

Do you know why we have different colours? In the wild, our fur serves several purposes. It acts as a camouflage to assist in our ability to hunt for food.
It is a source of insulation against the weather, and the various different locations that cats can be found generally determine the type of coat that a cat is likely to have.

Please don’t send those with long hair to the tropics. It is really hot! The thick coat will help to protect us in colder climates. For those who live in hot climates, our fur is finer and less dense. Some cats are even hairless, as they need to remain cool in hot climates.
