Choosing a New Kitten - Moggies and Pedigrees
So you’ve taken the plunge and decided to introduce a new kitten to your family, now is the time to think about what kitten would suit you the most. There are a great deal of kittens for sale, and it’s unlikely they will all be suitable for your way of life.
The very first thing you need to decide is whether you want a pedigree kitten or a moggy kitten.
Moggies
If you decide upon a moggy kitten (a kitten not of any particular breed, or perhaps a mix between two specific cat breeds), then you can buy them from many places. Kitten classifieds on the internet, local paper advertisements, advertised in shop windows, or asking at your local vets if they know of anyone who is looking to sell a kitten. You should be able to locate a kitten in your local area with ease. Chances are, if a moggy kitten is your choice, all you need to do is go and choose!
Moggy kittens are usually of a calm, friendly temperament, unless they are cross-bred with a breed that is knowingly temperamental. You can usually assume they will be good with children. They should also be resilient, and less prone to illness and also cheaper to keep.
Pedigrees
On the other end of the scale, Pedigree kittens are often harder to locate, depending on your chosen breed breed in mind. If you’re intending to keep your pedigree kitten with kids, you should consider researching the pedigree you are thinking of, and discounting the kittens that have behavioural problems around children! Pedigree breeds such as Siamese or Burmese cats have a tendency to strike and claw if provoked, making them unsuitable for a home with children.
Also, be aware of any breeds which are prone to sickness, and those that have relatively short life spans, and take this information into account before deciding what kitten you want.
Having chosen the breed that suits you, your family and your lifestyle, many people choose to get their kitten through a reputable cat breeder. Always ensure your pedigree kitten comes with all the official documents so you know you’re getting a 100% healthy pedigree kitten. You should also research the average price of the breed you have chosen before handing over any moeny.
It’s worth taking the time to find the ideal kitten for everyone, hopefully your kitten will be part of the family for many years.
